In 2017, California’s population was 39.17 million. So, with almost 40 million people living in the Pacific state, job opportunities abound.
The leading employment sectors in California are tourism, technology, and agriculture, but the state’s five biggest companies are not solely within those fields.
Here are California’s top five biggest employers:
1. 32nd Street Naval Base, San Diego
Naval Base San Diego is the homeport of the U.S. Pacific Naval Fleet and employs upwards of 25,000 Californians. The official industry category is “Federal Government – National Security.”
2. UCLA Health
UCLA Health is comprised of the Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA, UCLA Medical Center-Santa Monica, and the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, in addition to a multitude of outpatient centers throughout the state. UCLA Health was named one of the best places to work in 2018.
3. Walt Disney Parks and Resorts
Walt Disney Parks & Resorts is headquartered in Anaheim, CA, where all management for every single one of Disney’s parks and resorts around the world is overseen. In one year, the parks see over 130 million visitors around the world.

5. Disneyland Park
Disneyland employs approximately 30,000 people in total. Disneyland resort is the biggest employer in Orange County, coming in at 23,000 employees. On any given day, there are between 3,000 and 6,000 employees working at the park.
